Minnesota Adult Basic Education
Assessment Training
Training Catalog
The Minnesota Assessment Policy can be found on the Minnesota Adult Basic Education website policy page. Included in the policy is the following statement:
"New instructors should not administer assessments until they have participated in assessment training, which is offered by ABE supplemental service providers or complete an online certification training provided by the test developers on their websites. All instructors administering tests must participate in ABE supplemental services-provided training for each test they administer at least once every five (5) years."
The state trainers are eager to provide you with the training that will best meet the needs of you and your staff. We have offered a variety of presentations in the past and are willing to work with you to build the presentation that you need. To schedule a training, email Marty Olsen at martha.olsen@gmail.com.
A list of currently approved assessments can be found here.
CASAS IMPLEMENTATION TRAINING
This is a basic, introductory training, designed to walk participants through the CASAS assessment process, from appraisal to post-test. The process of using the test results to inform instruction will be explained. All Minnesota ABE staff who are involved with testing students or using the results of the tests must attend a test training at least once every five years. The intended audience for the training includes:
-
New teachers who are not familiar with the CASAS assessment system
-
Other new staff who may be responsible for intake and assessment
-
Intake and teaching staff who may be familiar with the CASAS assessments, but who have never had the opportunity to attend a formal implementation training, and/or who want to gain a better understanding of the entire system
-
"Seasoned" staff who want a refresher course in the CASAS assessment process
Implementation trainings are 3 hours long.
The optimal number of participants is 8 to 25 people. These trainings are available to Minnestoa ABE consortia and their partners.
CASAS Recertification
Is it time for your 5-year recertification as a CASAS test administrator? This session will provide a review of standardized testing and address questions you may have about administering CASAS tests. The latest updates on CASAS tests for English Language Learners and CASAS GOALS for ABE students will be shared.
This session will be 1 hour long.
Going Live with CASAS eTests
This training will begin with the basics as to what programs need to do prior to purchasing their CASAS eTests. Once the eTests have been purchased, the real work begins. Programs will need to connect to their account, and begin by adding sites and user accounts. Devices will need to be registered and testing sessions will need to be replicated. Finally, programs will be able to conduct a trial run with the staff before "going live" and offering a computer-based test to students. This session will walk participants through these steps and give many helpful online help links to go back to and review.
This training is 1 to 2 hours long.
CASAS Listening Test Implementation
CASAS offers multiple choice listening tests that add another perspective of understanding your students. This training will dive into the process of administering the Listening Appraisal, and then move on to pretests. Information about using the test results to inform instruction will be provided.
This training is 2 hours long.
TABE IMPLEMENTATION TRAINING
This is a basic, introductory training, designed to cover selecting and administering TABE 11&12, interpreting test scores, and measuring student progress. Completion of this training will satisfy the requirement for staff to attend a test training once every five years. The audience for the training includes:
